Cardboard Vs Corrugated: What’s The Difference?
By Sean Mulholland
Two popular packaging materials that are often confused with one another are corrugated and cardboard cartons. But there are significant differences between the two materials and it is important to know the ins and outs of both.
Today, we explore the differences between corrugated board and its seemingly similar counterpart, standard cardboard.
Cardboard is a heavy-duty paper stock commonly used for products such as cereal boxes and other consumer goods packaging. Corrugated, on the other hand, consists of three layers: an inside liner, an outside liner, and corrugated fluting in the middle. This fluting greatly increases the strength of the cardboard, making it ideal for cartons and packaging. Corrugated cardboard boxes, or shipper boxes, are both lightweight and strong, providing effective protection for the contents inside while still being easy to package and transport.
Application
The application of corrugated and cardboard in today’s market spans numerous industries due to its versatility and sustainability. From packaging and shipping to retail marketing displays, both materials offer practical and innovative solutions.
With their significant durability and strength, corrugated boxes are the better option for e-commerce and fulfilment. They are a great solution for sending fragile, heavy, or high-value goods, as they offer protection while still being easy to handle.
Cardboard is often used for the packaging of light, less fragile goods that require less protection. For instance, cardboard is a good solution for the packaging of stationery such as envelopes, folders, and notebooks. You will also notice its applicable use in cereal, snack, clothing, and shoe boxes.
Strength
The triple layer of corrugated cardboard provides enhanced strength compared to conventional cardboard. The structure of the corrugated walling is what makes it so robust. The wall consists of a layer of fluting sandwiched between two sturdy paper stock sheets. All of this ensures high protective performance under rigorous warehouse-like environments.
In comparison, regular cardboard is more fragile and prone to tearing and bending. As it consists of only one single layer, its structure provides minimal shielding in harsh shipping environments, making it more suitable for products that don’t require substantial protection.
Environmental Impact
Cardboard and corrugated cardboard are both recyclable and made from renewable resources. They can be easily recycled into new products, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Additionally, both types of cardboard are biodegradable, meaning they break down naturally over time.
What is the best choice?
When choosing between corrugated and cardboard packaging, the best choice depends on your specific needs and usage scenarios. Consider where and how the material will be used? Will it endure rough handling or extreme conditions? Do you need maximum protection for delicate items? Assess your requirements for durability, safety of goods, and the quantity needed. By understanding these factors, you can make a well-informed decision that aligns perfectly with your packaging needs.
